IELTS – International English Language Testing System

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a crucial standardized test and a gateway for students to top universities for the admission to the USA, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many other English-speaking countries to fulfill they career goals and to study abroad. It is one of the major English language tests in the world. IELTS is accepted to almost 25,000 academic institutions across the world. IELTS is accepted by the UK Visa and Immigration also known as UKVI for the visa application for those who want to live and work in the UK. 

The IELTS test, measures and analyses the various abilities of the test takers through 4 different sections such as Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. 

Types of IELTS Test:

There are two types of IELTS tests namely :

  1. Academic Module 
  2. General Training Module

  • Academic Module

    The Academic module is the test of IELTS taken by the international students for enrolling into the universities or higher education institutes, for professions such as healthcare, engineering and business management studies. The academic module, is the preferred IELTS test, taken by the students who aspire to study at an English-speaking university.

  • General Training Module

    The general training module are the type of test taken by aspirants who prefer to work in an English-speaking country and also for immigration purpose.

    As mentioned, the IELTS test has 4 sections namely, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Attention

  1. The sections of Listening, Reading and Writing are to be completed in one go and the Speaking section may be taken on the same day or on a later day depending on the test centers. 
  2. During the IELTS exam, the Listening and the Speaking sections are the same for all the test takers, while the Reading and Writing sections differ with academic or the general training module.

Importance and Description of the Four Sections of the IELTS Exam:

  • Listening

    The Listening section has 4 parts with 10 questions each, which can be completed in 40 minutes for the paper-based test or 32 minutes for the computer-based test. In Listening; before the test givers start, he/she is given a brief introduction about the situation and of the speaker. The test givers can go through the questions and the sequence of the questions are in the similar sequence with the information in the recordings. Each of the questions will only be heard just once, so the test givers must be alert during the process of the listening section. Make sure that the test givers use proper spelling and grammar while answering the questions in this section.

  • Reading

    The Reading section has 3 sub sections which totals the words to around 3000 words. There will be multiple type of questions which has to be answered, ranging from short-answer questions, multiple-choice questions, analyzing the writer’s point of view, summary completion, understanding the situation, diagram labelling and matching the headlines. There will be three reading text, which are taken from magazines, journals, newspapers, books and online resources. They are meant for general reading and comprehension catering to general interests and understanding of the students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

  • Writing

    In the Writing section there will be 2 tasks; where in task 1, the test givers are required to analyze the chart, pie-chart, table, maps, graph, diagrams etc. which the test givers are prompted to write their analyses in their own words. In task 2, the test givers are given a problem or an argument, where in which they are required to write solutions with clarity by properly justifying the opinion based on the analysis of the test givers.

  • Speaking

    The Speaking consists of a Face-to-Face interview between the examiner and the test taker. The speaking section consists of 3 sub sections where in which the 1st sub section consists of an interview which would last for over 5 minutes where the test givers are asked about their family, home, work, studies, hobbies and other interests. The test givers are also asked about their reasons for taking the IELTS test and are also asked about general topics which helps the examiner understand the test giver better. The 2nd sub section is almost 4 minutes long, where the test giver is given a specific topic from a task card, where he/she is given a minute to talk about the topic given. The examiner may ask a question or two to the test giver on what he/she had talked about. The 3rd sub division consist of 4 to 5 minutes of discussion between the test giver and the examiner, basically discussing asking about the topic talked in the 2nd sub division, which may have four to five questions.

  • Computer Based Test

    The test givers will get the results in 3 to 5 days.

  • Paper Based Test

    The test givers will get the results after 13 days.

The IELTS test score is valid for 2 years.

If you are not satisfied with the IELTS score that you had taken, you can request for EOR - Enquiry on Results review, which must be done in 6 weeks from the date of taking the test. For this the test givers can apply via their EOR from their student’s portal. The reviewed results are available in 2 to 21 calendar days.

Yes, you are mandatorily required to carry your original passport to the test center.
